 Good Food, Inconsistent Service, 08-17-2009

Review:
We typically have dinner as part of a larger group on Wednesday, "Date Night," when bottles of wine and gelato are half price at Villa Dolce. While the food is consistently good (especially the bruschetta!), last week, we went as a couple and felt that things were "off" from what we had become accustomed. It was 7:00 p.m., and when I ordered my favorite Margherita pizza, I was told that the restaurant had run out of fresh basil. An Italian restaurant that runs out of fresh basil in the middle of the summer? Really? Hmmm.

I ordered the Misto, instead. Not bad, but doesn't come close to bumping Margherita out of first place. I shared this with the waitress when she solicited my opinion of the new dish, and was surprised by her shrugged shoulders reaction. Wow.

We figured the suggestion of a free gelato wasn't unreasonable given the basil shortage, particularly since we have become known entities who come in on a regular basis. Instead, we were reminded that it was "Date Night," and we'd be getting our bottle of wine for half price. Gee, thanks.

By the end of the evening, we were admittedly ready to leave. We got our bill, and quickly slipped a credit card inside the holder. It seemed like forever before our waitress returned to pick it up.

The Villa Dolce experience isn't cheap. The bill for two adults is around $50 for one order of bruschetta, a 17" pizza, a bottle of wine, and usually, one shared gelato. This time, we were glad that we skipped the gelato and made a beeline for the door.

Bad experience, one that we won't be eager to repeat anytime soon. And very disappointing, because we are now looking for a different west side or Middleton restaurant to patronize on weekday evenings.
