Peppermill Grill and Bar Closed, Tilted Kilt to Open

EDIT:  See Review of Tilted Kilt - Click Here

Madison Diner Ted first alerted us to the fact that the Peppermill Grill and Bar appeared to have closed.  We frequented Peppermill relatively often for lunch, and are sorry to see it go.

Replacing the Peppermill is a new establishment, The Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery.  This should be quite an interesting test for Madison.  The first Tilted Kilt opened in Las Vegas, featuring scantily clad women in attire even more revealing than other more famous “scantily clad women” establishments.  There appear to be eight Tilted Kilts located around the country at this time, with several more due to open shortly.

More perplexing than the server attire is the Tilted Kilt’s claim to serve “Cold, really cold beer”, while featuring an image of a pint of Guinness.  Enough said, beer drinkers?

  1. So its basically Hooters in plaid?

  2. Just what Madison needs: ANOTHER bar and grill.

  3. I’ve been to the kilt in Green Bay, WI. The food & atmosphere are both great… so is the wait staff… better than Hooters. This will be an awesome addition to the Madison area.

  4. Somehow “great..atmosphere” and “Hooters” in the same sentence sounds a bit strange.

    (-;

  5. Not surprised (and glad) to hear that the Pepper Mill closed. It was one of our worst dinning experiences in Madison. Never have visited a Tilted Kilt, I believe they will need to have a “Something to die for” to stay in this over restaurant populated location.

  6. 1) Restaurants like Peppermill are never an “addition” to Madison

    2) Tilted Kilt will not only enter a market flooded with bars, but it will most likely contradict all the money the city and neighborhood has spent to give that area a facelift.

  7. Yep, been to a Tilted Kilt in Green Bay and my entire group, girls included kept saying we need something like this in Madison. Not as bad as you think…the guys wear kilts, too. I rarely ever feel like servers actually care about their job, but the two we had in G.B. actually did. Lots of smiles from our group…

  8. Oh my, scantily clad women, what if one of my children sees one, what will i do? How can we allow this trash in our neighborhoods? Join with me and ruin the fun for everyone with our ancient moral outlook on life!!!

  9. People need to relax a bit. As the owner of a website that features Madison (and Green Bay) area restaurants and bars, there are plenty for everyone to go to. If you are offended by women that wear the same amount of clothing that most every girl does in the summer time around Madison (yes, I lived there for six years), don’t go to the Tilted Kilt. If you think your kids shouldn’t see the same stuff they see when you take them to the area pool, get a sitter. Else, allow supply and demand to take course. If they do well, there was obviously a demand in the area. If they don’t, they’ll be a statistic just like the Peppermill.

I get the feeling that some people feel that others force them to go places. If you don’t like it, don’t go! I feel the same about the smoking ban, BTW. I’m glad to have moved away from all the Madison drama.

  10. Haven’t we learned from all the violence from the Majestic Club a few years ago that the wrong business in a community can be devastating for the citizens and other businesses. Supply and demand is not the answer to what is best for our communities. If we say one standard is acceptable what will be acceptable the next year and the year after that.
There is a school, businesses and homes in this area. That is the reason why people are voicing their opinions. This effects their lives. Whether if it succeeds or not -what does it open the door for? What will this community look like in the future?

  11. Well…is everyone aware the Tilted Kilt is owned by the same owners of Peppermill Grill, and Country Kitchen? And, if they can’t run the others how can they run another? Don’t get too excited about the ladies kilts, it won’t be around long.

  12. As Hard to Believable said, this won’t be around for sure.Everything this company has operated is failing or will fail for sure.Just another blip on the dining scene and will be gone soon!

  13. Ok then, I understand that maybe the Peppermill and Country Kitchen failed, but isn’t that kind of the point? If those failed, then thier is obviosly a need for a alternative dining environment. It is my opinion that Hooter’s and Tilted Kilt are 2 way different resteraunts. Hooter’s food is all deep fried or at least all really unhealthy at that. Furthermore, while I’m sure that people will flock to Tilted Kilt to see the attractive wait staff, shouldn’t Madison be proud of the beautiful people who live in this city? In conclusion, everyone needs to calm down. I wish tilted kilt all the best and I hope that people won’t knock it down before they even give it a chance. The whole point of websites like this to experience new restaurants, so don’t knock it till you try it.

  14. So I visited the Tilted Kilt last night and it was worse than I expected, WAY worse. First of all its totally overpriced but they figure they can get away with it b/c dirty old men (and young men too I guess) will gladly pay those prices to oogle the nearly naked waitresses. The girls are showing about 10x more skin than the hooter’s girls. They make Hooters look tame in comparison. The girls are outfitted in mini skirts, knee highs, mary janes, and peekaboo bras with white school girl shirts tied up under their boobs (so yes they are baring their stomachs). Think Britney Spears in “baby one more time”. I can’t support an establishment like that…totally objectifying women and the like. Also there are no male staff on the floor, only behind the bar and in the kitchen. I noticed that the “experience” goes beyond just the uniforms, the girls seem to be required to sit down at your table and chat you up (you know pretend like they like you and flirt shamelessly for tips). alas men are fools and will not see through this shallow act. My question is how can you give good service when you have to sit down and talk to every table for 10-15 mintues? Don’t you need to be taking orders, getting drinks, minding refills, and dropping checks? Seems like while you’re attending to one table you would be totally neglecting another.

  15. You sound like a very unpleasant person, not a fan.

  16. I met some friends there after work and it was packed by six o’clock. Of course it’s new, and I’m sure there were alot of curious folks there. But in reading the predictions posted here indicating a early demise, I have to recall the similar predictions for Hooters SEVERAL years ago and they don’t seem to be going anywhere soon. For every politically correct guy who posts his disdain for this type of place, there are five guys, standing in line, willing to pay full price for the “atmosphere.” And those guys probaly won’t blog about it. Although the above post by “Not a fan” is critical and states that it was “WAY worse” than he expected, that description of the uniforms is far more likely to increase traffic.

  17. And what about the food? I notice that not one word has been said about that, except the person who noted that Hooters food was all fried and/or unhealthy.

I couldn’t care less what the staff is wearing, except that as a straight woman, a place geared to oggling better have some damned fine men walking around as well. But even that won’t get me there unless the food is good. Is it a restaurant or a tittie bar?

You can see scantily clad women and men for free. Just go down to the campus area. Why would you go somewhere for bad overpriced food?

    Suckers!

  18. Some of you prudes need to get a life. You have choices in life and that is what’s great about this country (or was in some cases). If you don’t like some thing don’t watch it, don’t read it, don’t go to it… So many idiots in this world pushing their beliefs on others. If people paid more attention to their own lives and less about budding into others this world would be a much better place…

Went their last night…it was grrrrr-eat…call me a pig…I could care less what you think…

  19. I went there last night with my husband. I was a bit surprised (but not offended) at the waitstaff (all female) attire and the slightly naughty limericks on the back cover of the menu. I’m not sure we’d take our 15-year old son, I agree that the attire is not far off that of some of his high school classmates, but he’d probably be embarassed to be there with his parents.

The greeter was attentive, offering to change the TV channel if we wished, and our server was attentive but not overly so. The food was good, hot and arrived quickly, although I wish they would offer more classic English/Irish/Scottish fare (perhaps that’s a need met elsewhere in town, and I’m guessing the other diners/drinkers wouldn’t care).

  20. When Hooters first opened in the Chicago area, it was fantastic. What guy doesnt like a lot of attention from a pretty waitress. The food was good if slightly overpriced. We actually went for the buffalo shrimp. Then they cut back on staff and hired women that thought they were entitled to big tips even tho they ignored us. I used to eat at Hooters twice a week, but have been only twice in the last 5 years. If tilted kilt is like the hooters of old, I’ll give it a try. But I would like to hear more about the food.

  21. I HAVE BEEN THERE A FEW TIMES AND WAS PLEASED WITH THE SERVICE. I FOUND THE FOOD TO BE BETTER THAN WHAT I EXPECTED BUT THEN FOR THE PRICE IT BETTER BE GOOD. A FRIEND WHO WAS A “FIXER” IN THE RESTAURANT BIZ THOUGHT THERE WAS ROOM FOR SOME IMPROVEMENT BUT OVERALL GAVE IT GOOD MARKS, THEY WERE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH ONE OF THERE TAP LINES AND OFFERED US SOME FREE BEER AND ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT COSTUMER SERVICE KNOWS THAT IF YOU DO SOMETHING FOR THE COSTUMER THEY WILL REMEMBER IT. WE ALSO THOUGHT THE QUANTITY OF FOOD WAS VERY GOOD. AS FOR THE OUTFITS OF THE STAFF, THEY ARE A TAD SMALL BUT GO OUT TO A CLUB ON A WEEKEND AND YOU CAN SEE WORSE. ALSO. IF THE GIRLS DIDN’T WANT WEAR THE OUTFIT, THEY WOULDN’T BE THERE.
AND TO ALL THE PRUDE’S. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, DON’T GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
